What is Actos?

Actos (pioglitazone hydrochloride) is an oral antidiabetic agent that works to decrease insulin resistance. The drug is used to help treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is also recognized as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus [NIDDM] or adult-onset diabetes. Studies performed by pharmacologists show that Actos improves sensitivity to insulin in muscle and adipose tissue and inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis. Unfortunately, Actos is now the second medication in the thiazolidinedione (TZD) class to be associated with serious side effects within the past year, including Actos bladder cancer.

What are the potential Actos bladder cancer dangers?

According the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), patients who have taken Actos for more than one year may potentially have an increased risk of 40 percent for developing bladder cancer. As a result, the FDA developed stronger warning labels, which included the following information:

  • Not to use pioglitazone in patients with active bladder cancer
  • Use pioglitazone with caution in patients with a prior history of bladder cancer

Additionally, the labels recommend the following:

“Contact their healthcare professional if they experience any sign of blood in the urine or a red color in the urine or other symptoms such as new or worsening urinary urgency or pain on urination since starting pioglitazone, as these may be due to bladder cancer.”

In France, a recent epidemiological study revealed a potential elevated risk of developing Actos bladder cancer. As a result, Actos is no longer prescribed to new patients in France.
